Afghanistan Dominate West Indies in Dubai T20 Thriller

adminBy adminJanuary 20, 20265 Mins Read

Afghanistan delivered a statement performance in Dubai on January 19, 2026, defeating West Indies by 38 runs in the first T20 International of the series. The victory not only extended Afghanistan’s growing dominance in limited-overs cricket but also reinforced their credentials as a dangerous unit ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Interestingly, the triumph came just a day after Afghanistan’s Under-19 side had beaten West Indies at the Under-19 World Cup in Windhoek. The senior team ensured the momentum continued, producing a composed, tactical, and thoroughly professional performance.

    Early Setback, Calm Response

Afghanistan’s innings began in dramatic fashion. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was run out off the very first ball after a sharp direct hit from Gudakesh Motie caught him short at the non-striker’s end. Sediqullah Atal followed soon after, mistiming a short delivery straight to Brandon King, who pulled off a brilliant one-handed catch at first slip.

At 19 for 2, Afghanistan were in early trouble. However, what followed was one of the finest middle-order partnerships the team has produced in T20 cricket.

    Zadran and Rasooli Take Control

Ibrahim Zadran and Darwish Rasooli combined patience with calculated aggression to rebuild the innings. Zadran, calm and technically sound, relied heavily on straight-bat shots and precise placement. He brought up his fourth consecutive T20I half-century and eventually finished unbeaten on 87 from 56 deliveries.

Rasooli complemented him perfectly. While Zadran focused on timing and balance, Rasooli used cross-batted strokes and clever rotation of strike to keep the scoreboard ticking. His acceleration against Khary Pierre in the 15th over — hitting 4, 6, and 4 — shifted momentum decisively back in Afghanistan’s favour after a brief boundary drought.

Together, the pair added a magnificent 162-run partnership for the third wicket, transforming Afghanistan’s position from vulnerable to commanding.

    Missed Chances Cost West Indies

West Indies were not helped by poor fielding in the closing overs. Three straightforward chances were dropped across the 18th and 19th overs. Rasooli was put down once, while Zadran survived two reprieves. These lapses allowed Afghanistan to extract maximum value at the death.

By the time Rasooli was finally dismissed on the last ball of the innings, Afghanistan had surged to 181 for 3 — a total Zadran later admitted was about 20 runs more than the team had targeted after the powerplay.

    Spin Chokes the Chase

West Indies began their chase cautiously, but the pitch clearly favoured slower bowlers. Mujeeb Ur Rahman set the tone early by beating Brandon King with a delivery that spun sharply past bat and pad.

Ziaur Rahman Sharifi’s introduction briefly gave West Indies hope when Johnson Charles attacked him for 16 runs in four balls. However, Ziaur responded brilliantly, dismissing Charles with a rising delivery that produced a top-edge catch. He later returned to remove Quentin Sampson and Khary Pierre, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 36.

    Rashid Khan’s Tactical Brilliance

Rashid Khan’s spell was arguably the most influential of the night. Bowling immediately after the powerplay, he maintained a tight line outside off stump, forcing batters into risky slog sweeps.

Shimron Hetmyer fell trying to force the pace, while Amir Jangoo was trapped on the pads attempting another sweep. Rashid conceded just 19 runs while bowling 15 dot balls, effectively freezing the scoring rate.

Though Sampson briefly entertained with two sixes in one over, West Indies were already far behind the required rate.

    West Indies Lose Direction

Needing 89 runs from the final six overs, West Indies never truly looked capable of mounting a comeback. Afghanistan’s bowlers consistently targeted the stumps, used pace variations cleverly, and denied easy scoring options.

Once Sampson was dismissed with the score at 95 for 6, the lower order was left with an impossible task. West Indies eventually finished on 143 for 9, falling well short of the target.

    A Complete Afghan Performance

This match showcased Afghanistan’s evolution as a complete T20 side. Their batting displayed maturity and adaptability, their bowling showed intelligence and control, and their fielding — apart from a few moments — was disciplined and energetic.

The combination of youth and experience, particularly in their spin department, makes Afghanistan a dangerous opponent in any conditions. Zadran and Rasooli’s partnership will be remembered as one of the defining highlights of this contest.

    What Lies Ahead

For Afghanistan, this win strengthens belief and momentum ahead of the T20 World Cup. It proves they can recover from early setbacks, build big partnerships, and defend totals with tactical discipline.

For West Indies, the defeat exposes familiar concerns — struggles against quality spin, inconsistent fielding, and an inability to build long partnerships under pressure.

    Conclusion

Afghanistan’s 38-run victory over West Indies was not just a win on the scoreboard — it was a statement of intent. Powered by Ibrahim Zadran’s composure, Darwish Rasooli’s enterprise, and a relentless spin attack, Afghanistan demonstrated why they are no longer outsiders in world cricket.

As the series progresses and the World Cup approaches, this performance will stand as a reminder that Afghanistan are ready to challenge the best — and beat them with authority.
