The much-anticipated launch of the newly-instituted Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy—meant to commemorate the Test rivalry between England and India—has been postponed following a tragic air accident near Ahmedabad on Sunday evening.
The incident, involving a chartered aircraft carrying over 80 passengers, resulted in at least 41 fatalities and several injuries, according to preliminary reports from the Gujarat state authorities. Emergency response teams have been deployed on-site, and a probe is underway to determine the cause of the crash. The Prime Minister has expressed deep condolences, and a one-day state mourning has been declared in Gujarat.
As a mark of respect, both the England and Indian cricket boards jointly agreed to delay the ceremonial unveiling of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, which was scheduled to be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad ahead of the five-Test series set to begin this Friday.
A joint statement from the BCCI and ECB read:
“In light of the tragic air incident in Ahmedabad and as a mark of deep respect to the lives lost, the official launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy stands postponed. Cricket is secondary at this moment of grief. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.”

The trophy, named after two legends of the modern game—England pacer James Anderson and India’s batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar—was to be formally introduced in a high-profile ceremony featuring both players, alongside dignitaries from the sport and politics.
James Anderson, who recently announced that this India tour will mark his retirement from Test cricket, was expected to deliver an emotional address at the ceremony. Tendulkar, who holds numerous records against England, had called the naming of the trophy “a great honour that reflects mutual cricketing respect.”
The opening Test of the five-match series remains on schedule, but players from both camps will reportedly wear black armbands as a tribute to the victims. A moment of silence is also expected before the toss on Day 1.
While the unveiling is likely to be rescheduled for a later date during the series, cricket fans have welcomed the decision to postpone the launch, lauding it as a thoughtful gesture of solidarity in the wake of a devastating national tragedy.
