Irfan Pathan banned? Other instances of Indian commentators facing the heat

adminBy adminMarch 24, 20252 Mins Read

As of now, there are no reports indicating that former Indian cricketer and commentator Irfan Pathan has been banned from commentary duties. However, Indian cricket commentary has witnessed several controversies involving commentators facing criticism or sanctions due to their on-air remarks.

Sanjay Manjrekar’s Removal from BCCI Commentary Panel

In March 2020, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed Sanjay Manjrekar from its commentary panel. While the BCCI did not specify the exact reasons, sources indicated dissatisfaction with his work. Manjrekar had previously faced backlash for calling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja a “bits and pieces cricketer” during the 2019 World Cup, leading to a public spat between the two. He also had a contentious on-air exchange with fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle regarding the visibility of the pink ball during a Test match.

    Isa Guha’s ‘Primate’ Comment

In December 2024, during the third Test between Australia and India in Brisbane, commentator Isa Guha referred to Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as “India’s Most Valuable Primate” while praising his performance. The comment was perceived as racially insensitive, leading to significant backlash. Guha issued an on-air apology, clarifying that her choice of words was inappropriate and unintentional, emphasizing her commitment to respect and inclusivity in the sport.

    Dinesh Karthik’s Sexist Remark

In July 2021, Indian cricketer and commentator Dinesh Karthik faced criticism for likening cricket bats to “neighbor’s wife” during a live broadcast. The analogy was deemed sexist, prompting Karthik to apologize on-air during the subsequent match. He acknowledged the inappropriateness of his comment and mentioned receiving feedback from his mother and wife, assuring viewers of more careful language in the future.

These incidents underscore the importance of mindfulness and cultural sensitivity in sports commentary, highlighting the significant impact commentators’ words can have on audiences and the broader cricketing community.
