Pratik Gandhi’s Phule release postponed amid controversy over caste representation

adminBy adminApril 10, 20251 Min Read

The release of the much-anticipated biographical film Phule, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, has been postponed amid controversy regarding caste representation. Originally scheduled to premiere on April 11, 2025, to coincide with the 197th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, the film’s debut has been rescheduled to April 25, 2025.

Phule, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan, portrays the lives of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, pioneers in championing education and equality in 19th-century India. Pratik Gandhi embodies the role of Jyotirao Phule, while Patralekhaa portrays Savitribai Phule.

The decision to delay the film’s release follows objections raised concerning its depiction of caste dynamics and representation. Director Ananth Mahadevan addressed these concerns, stating, “It is not an agenda film.”

The filmmakers have expressed their commitment to ensuring the film authentically represents the Phules’ legacy and addresses the sensitivities surrounding caste representation. The additional time will be utilized to make necessary adjustments, aiming to honor the historical figures’ contributions while being mindful of contemporary perspectives.
