Sunny Deol’s Jaat Sparks Outrage Over Church Scene; Christian Groups Demand Ban

    April 16, 20253 Mins Read

Bollywood actor Sunny Deol’s upcoming action-drama Jaat has landed in hot water ahead of its theatrical release, as a controversial church scene from the film has sparked intense backlash from Christian communities across the country. Several Christian organizations have condemned the depiction, calling it “deeply hurtful” and “disrespectful to religious sentiments,” and are demanding an immediate ban on the film’s release.

    The Scene in Question

The outrage centers around a specific sequence in the film’s trailer, released last week, where Deol’s character is seen walking into a church in a violent rage, overturning pews and confronting a priest while holding a weapon. The scene is reportedly part of a flashback depicting the character’s troubled past, but its inclusion has triggered widespread criticism.

“The portrayal of a holy place in such a violent and sacrilegious context is unacceptable,” said Father Anthony D’Souza, a representative of the All India Christian Federation. “We believe in artistic freedom, but not when it crosses the line into blasphemy. This scene shows a complete disregard for the sanctity of our faith.”

    Demands for Action

In a formal letter to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, several Christian leaders have called for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to revoke the film’s clearance. Protests have already erupted in cities like Goa, Kochi, and parts of Mumbai, with demonstrators holding placards and chanting slogans such as “Ban Jaat” and “Respect all religions.”

“We will not allow this movie to be screened unless the scene is removed,” said Sister Mary Grace of the Mumbai Archdiocese. “Cinema is powerful, and misrepresentations like this only spread intolerance.”

    Response from the Filmmakers

Director Rajeev Chaudhary issued a brief statement defending the film, asserting that Jaat is “a work of fiction that does not intend to target or demean any community.”

“The scene has been taken out of context,” he said. “We urge viewers to watch the full film before jumping to conclusions. However, we are open to dialogue with representatives of the Christian community to address their concerns.”

Sunny Deol, known for his patriotic and action-heavy roles, has remained tight-lipped on the controversy so far. His team has not released an official comment, though sources close to the actor suggest he may address the issue in the coming days.

    Social Media Reactions

The controversy has also taken over social media, with hashtags like #BanJaat and #RespectFaith trending on X (formerly Twitter). While some users have condemned the film, others have come out in support of creative freedom, urging viewers to wait for the full context before judging.

“Religious harmony is important, but so is the freedom of expression,” wrote one user. “Let’s not jump the gun based on a trailer clip.”

    What’s Next?

The CBFC has reportedly summoned the filmmakers for an urgent review. Meanwhile, some theatres in southern states have pulled promotional materials for Jaat until the issue is resolved.

With tensions rising and the film’s release date looming, it remains to be seen whether the filmmakers will agree to edit the contentious scene—or risk a nationwide ban.
