Bengaluru Stampede: Ex-Top Cop Blames Siddaramaiah, His Deputy for Hurried Celebrations

adminBy adminJune 5, 20253 Mins Read

The tragic stampede during a government-organized event in Bengaluru has sparked a political storm in Karnataka, with former top police officer Bhaskar Rao blaming Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar for allegedly rushing the celebrations without proper planning or security coordination.

The incident occurred during a state-sponsored function organized to celebrate the successful completion of the government’s welfare schemes. Held at the sprawling grounds of Palace Grounds, the event witnessed a massive turnout — reportedly over 80,000 people — many of whom had been bused in from rural areas across the state. In the rush and chaos that followed poor crowd management, several people were injured, and at least seven lost their lives.

Former Bengaluru Commissioner of Police and AAP leader Bhaskar Rao came down heavily on the Congress-led state government. “This was a complete administrative failure,” Rao said in a statement to the media. “The event was hurriedly put together for political optics. There was no coordination between the police, fire and emergency services, or crowd control units. It seems public safety was an afterthought.”

Rao also alleged that the pressure to make the event a grand showcase of the government’s achievements led to corners being cut. “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar should take moral responsibility for this disaster. The people who died came with hope — to witness promises being fulfilled. What they received instead was negligence,” he said.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders, including BJP’s Basavaraj Bommai and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy, joined the chorus of criticism. “This tragedy was avoidable,” Bommai stated. “The government must answer why emergency protocols failed and why no proper entry-exit channels were arranged.”

In response to the backlash, CM Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow and announced compensation of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for those seriously injured. “We are ordering a high-level inquiry. Those responsible will not be spared,” he said.

Deputy CM Shivakumar, while defending the intentions behind the event, admitted to lapses in execution. “We had hoped to make it a people-centric celebration. Unfortunately, unforeseen crowd dynamics overwhelmed our arrangements. We will cooperate fully with the investigation.”

The Karnataka High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and issued notices to the state government, Bengaluru police, and event organizers.

As the state mourns the loss of innocent lives, questions around accountability, political showmanship, and public safety are being raised louder than ever. The tragic stampede may leave a lasting scar on Siddaramaiah’s government unless corrective actions and transparency follow swiftly.
