Firing Across LoC in J&K: Indian Army Responds to Ceasefire Violations by Pakistan

adminBy adminMay 2, 20253 Mins Read

Tensions flared along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir as the Indian Army responded firmly to yet another ceasefire violation by Pakistani forces. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday in the Poonch and Rajouri sectors, saw intense cross-border firing and shelling initiated by Pakistan, drawing a strong retaliatory response from Indian troops.

According to defence sources, Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire on Indian forward posts and civilian areas, using small arms and mortars. The Indian Army swiftly responded with precision strikes, targeting Pakistani positions responsible for the ceasefire breach. No casualties were reported on the Indian side, while damage on the Pakistani side is being assessed through surveillance inputs.

The exchange of fire comes amid a series of sporadic violations of the ceasefire agreement reaffirmed by both countries in February 2021. While the agreement led to a significant reduction in cross-border violence for nearly two years, recent incidents suggest a worrying pattern of escalation from the Pakistani side.

Defence officials in Srinagar stated that the Indian Army remains on high alert and is prepared to respond decisively to any provocation. “Our forces are maintaining a robust posture and are committed to safeguarding the territorial integrity and peace along the LoC,” an official said.

Local residents near the LoC have expressed fear and concern, with many families seeking shelter in safer zones during the exchange. Civil administration officials are monitoring the situation and have assured that contingency plans are in place to protect civilians in border areas.

Experts believe the recent firing could be aimed at aiding infiltration attempts by terrorists waiting to cross into Indian territory. “These ceasefire violations are often a cover for pushing militants across the border,” said a senior security analyst. “With the snow beginning to melt in higher reaches, such attempts may increase.”

The Indian Army has also stepped up counter-infiltration measures and surveillance along vulnerable stretches of the LoC. Senior commanders are closely reviewing the ground situation, and additional troops have been deployed in sensitive areas to prevent any cross-border misadventures.

India has repeatedly urged Pakistan to honour the ceasefire pact and focus on creating a conducive environment for peace. However, persistent violations and the presence of terror launch pads across the border continue to strain diplomatic ties.

As the region witnesses another surge in hostilities, calls for sustained vigilance, proactive defence, and the protection of civilian lives remain more critical than ever.
