Jadeja at No.5? Sanjay Bangar Weighs in on All-Rounder’s Batting Role in Indian Team

adminBy adminJuly 30, 20252 Mins Read

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has sparked an interesting debate around the role of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the Indian batting order, especially his suitability for the No.5 position in the current setup. Speaking on a cricket analysis show recently, Bangar shared his insights on how Jadeja’s batting prowess has evolved and whether he fits into the top-middle order of India’s batting lineup.

Jadeja, long known for his explosive cameos down the order and his game-changing spells with the ball, has gradually developed into a dependable batsman. Over the past few years, he has delivered consistent performances, particularly in Test cricket, often rescuing the team from precarious situations. However, in the white-ball format, his position has remained fluid — oscillating between No.6, No.7, and occasionally higher.

“Jadeja at No.5 is a big call,” Bangar admitted. “He certainly has the skills and temperament, but whether he can consistently anchor the innings and build it like a specialist batter is still under observation. In Test matches, he has proved his worth. But in ODIs and T20Is, the No.5 slot demands a different approach — it’s about rotating strike, building partnerships, and accelerating at the right moment.”

Bangar emphasized that while Jadeja is versatile, his impact might be maximized when given the freedom to attack, particularly in the lower middle order. “The No.6 or 7 position allows Jadeja to play to his strengths — counter-attacking cricket. At No.5, the margin for error is thinner. You might be walking in at 10 for 2 or 150 for 3, and both scenarios require different approaches,” he explained.

Despite the questions, the Indian team management seems keen on promoting Jadeja higher up the order to add depth and flexibility, especially when playing two or more all-rounders. His left-handedness also brings variation in the lineup, breaking up a string of right-handers — a factor crucial in modern matchups.

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the World T20 in the near horizon, the team’s experiments with Jadeja’s batting slot could continue. For now, Sanjay Bangar’s comments have added a thoughtful dimension to the ongoing discussions around team composition and the optimal use of India’s premier all-rounder.
