President Droupadi Murmu had nominated Kamal Haasan to the Rajya Sabha under the special category for distinguished individuals in the fields of arts, literature, science, and social service. With decades of contribution to Indian cinema and growing involvement in social and political issues, Haasan’s nomination was widely seen as a recognition of his multifaceted impact.
Speaking to the media after his oath, Haasan said, “This is not just a personal milestone, but a responsibility I carry on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu and India. I will speak for progressive politics, rationality, and inclusive development in this new role.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar extended their wishes to Haasan on his induction. Opposition parties too expressed cautious optimism about his role in Parliament, with some hoping he would use his platform to highlight issues such as federalism, linguistic rights, and cultural representation.
Kamal Haasan’s entry into the Rajya Sabha adds yet another chapter to the growing influence of artists and public intellectuals in Indian politics. Known for his outspoken views, especially on corruption, education reform, and scientific temper, Haasan is expected to bring a unique blend of cultural insight and political critique to parliamentary proceedings.
As the Parliament session continues, all eyes will be on the actor-turned-politician to see how he translates his cinematic charisma and activist zeal into legislative impact.
