Rain Likely in Mumbai Today; Odisha, Bengal on Alert for Heavy Downpours

adminBy adminMay 28, 20253 Mins Read

Residents of Mumbai are bracing for a wet day as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rain showers across the city today. The showers are expected to bring much-needed respite from the summer heat, but authorities have warned of potential waterlogging in low-lying areas and advised commuters to plan their travel accordingly.

According to the IMD, pre-monsoon activity is intensifying along the west coast, with the southwest monsoon showing signs of early advancement. Cloud cover has increased significantly over Mumbai and surrounding districts like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, with intermittent rain likely through the day.

Meanwhile, in eastern India, Odisha and West Bengal have been placed on high alert as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moves closer to the coast. The weather department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of both states over the next 48 hours.

    Odisha Braces for Torrential Rain

The IMD has issued a red alert for several coastal and interior districts of Odisha, including Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Cuttack. The state government has activated emergency response teams and asked district collectors to stay vigilant. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions and high waves.

Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Jena said, “We are closely monitoring the situation and have made all necessary arrangements for evacuation and relief operations in case of flooding or landslides.”

    West Bengal Issues Flood Watch

In West Bengal, districts such as South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Howrah are expected to receive intense downpours. Kolkata is also likely to witness heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds. The state’s disaster management teams are on standby, and urban bodies have been instructed to ensure the proper drainage of rainwater to prevent waterlogging.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the peak of the storm. “We are taking all precautions and working with the central agencies to tackle any emergency that may arise,” she stated.

    IMD’s Outlook

The IMD has stated that the weather system over the Bay of Bengal may strengthen into a cyclonic storm in the coming days, although it is currently projected to make landfall as a depression. Continuous updates will be provided to keep the public informed.

With rains expected to intensify, residents in affected areas are urged to follow official advisories, stay safe, and remain alert for updates on weather developments.
