Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, expressed his indignation, stating, “Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan, an obscene fashion show is organised in Gulmarg… Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir.”
Similarly, People’s Conference president Sajad Lone described the event as “eminently avoidable” during Ramzan, emphasizing the need for sensitivity towards local sentiments.
Assembly Proceedings and Government Response
The issue resonated within the J&K Legislative Assembly, prompting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to clarify the government’s stance. He asserted that the administration had no involvement in the event, stating, “I want to make clear that the government had no role. Had they sought permission, we would not have given it. It was a private function organised in a private hotel…”
Abdullah acknowledged the public’s hurt sentiments and ordered an inquiry into the matter, directing the administration to submit a report within 24 hours. He assured that appropriate action would follow based on the findings.
BJP’s Stand: Outrage Unwarranted
Contrasting the prevailing sentiments, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has termed the outrage as unwarranted. A senior BJP leader commented, “While we respect religious sentiments, it’s essential to recognize that the fashion show was a private event held in a private venue. The immediate backlash seems disproportionate, especially when the government had no involvement.”
