Virat Kohli Could’ve Waited Till England Series Before Retiring: Madan Lal

adminBy adminMay 12, 20252 Mins Read

Veteran Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup hero Madan Lal has expressed his views on Virat Kohli’s recent retirement from T20 internationals, suggesting that the star batter could have extended his career at least until the upcoming series against England. Kohli announced his T20I retirement after India’s triumphant campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, citing a desire to focus on the longer formats and give younger players a chance to shine in the shortest format.

Madan Lal, however, believes Kohli had more to offer.

“Virat is still supremely fit and in form. He could have easily played the England series and contributed significantly. His experience is invaluable, especially against strong teams like England,” said Lal in a recent interview.

Lal acknowledged Kohli’s immense contribution to Indian cricket and respected his decision but hinted that his sudden announcement came as a surprise.

“I understand the need to make way for the next generation, but there’s a timing to everything. A farewell series at home, especially against a top side like England, would have been fitting for a player of his stature,” he added.

The England T20I series, scheduled to begin later this year, is being seen as a vital step in preparing India’s squad for the next ICC event. With the retirement of stalwarts like Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the T20 format, the Indian team is undergoing a transition phase.

Despite his retirement from T20Is, Kohli remains a key part of India’s ODI and Test plans. The selectors have retained him in the core squad for the upcoming red-ball assignments, and his leadership and consistency are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s performance.

As fans and analysts digest Kohli’s exit from T20Is, the debate continues over whether his departure came a bit too soon. While his legacy in the format is unquestionable, voices like Madan Lal’s reflect the sentiment of those who feel Indian cricket could have benefited from a little more of Virat’s firepower in the shortest format.
