In a development that could mark the end of an era in Indian cricket, star batter Virat Kohli has reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his intention to retire from Test cricket before India’s upcoming tour of England, according to sources close to the matter.
While an official statement from Kohli or the BCCI is yet to be released, sources suggest that the 36-year-old has conveyed his decision privately to top board officials and the Indian team management. Kohli, who last played a Test match in early 2024, has been on a self-imposed break from red-ball cricket and has not featured in India’s recent Test assignments.
A Glorious Test Career
Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and has since established himself as one of the modern greats of the game. With over 8,700 runs in more than 110 Test matches, including 29 centuries, his contributions have been instrumental in India’s rise to the top of the Test rankings during the past decade.
He captained India in 68 Tests, leading the team to 40 wins — a record for any Indian Test skipper. Under his leadership, India won memorable series in Australia and held an impressive home record.
Possible Reasons Behind the Decision
According to insiders, Kohli’s decision is influenced by multiple factors, including a desire to manage his workload, focus on white-ball cricket ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and spend more time with his family. There have also been concerns about his recurring fitness issues, although no official medical report has linked them directly to the decision.
“Virat has always been honest about where he stands. He believes this is the right time to step aside from Tests and allow the next generation to take over,” a BCCI source told the press on condition of anonymity.
Reactions and Legacy
Though the news is yet to be confirmed publicly, the cricketing world is already reacting. Fans have taken to social media to express a mix of gratitude and sorrow, while former cricketers have lauded Kohli for his passion and discipline in the longest format.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri called Kohli’s Test career “a masterclass in intensity and commitment,” while Sunil Gavaskar said, “He changed the face of Indian Test cricket, making fitness and aggression hallmarks of the team.”
What’s Next?
India’s tour of England is scheduled for July 2025, featuring five Test matches. With Kohli stepping away, selectors will likely look at younger talents to fill the void, possibly giving more responsibility to players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
If confirmed, Kohli’s retirement from Tests will close a monumental chapter in Indian cricket. However, fans will still hope to see him dazzle in ODIs and T20Is for some more time.
